How to Apply for an Ohio Nursing License

If you have a nursing license in another state or U.S. territory, you can apply for your nursing license in Ohio by reciprocity (also known as endorsement) through the Ohio Board of Nursing. All license applications must be submitted online.

TheOhio Board of Nursingrequires nurses applying for licensure by endorsement to:

  • Register on the Ohio eLicense 3.0 System to create an account
  • Complete the online RN application and pay the $75 fee*
  • Verify original nursing license by examination and current nursing license(s)
  • Submit completed fingerprint cards for criminal background checks
  • Provide certified nursing school transcripts, sent directly from the school
  • Complete 2 contact hours of CE on Ohio nursing practice; see Board website for approved courses and providers

Is Ohio an NLC State?

Currently, Ohio is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact(NLC), the multistate agreement that allows nurses in more than 39 states to work across state lines without getting an additional license. Travel nurses with a compact state license will still need to apply for Ohio RN licensure by endorsement.

How Long Does it Take to Get an Ohio Nursing License by Endorsement?

Getting your nursing license in Ohio will normally take around 6 weeks from the date your complete application is submitted.

How to Renew Your Nursing License in Ohio

Ohio nursing licenses renew every two years. You can renew online via Ohio’s online licensing portal and pay the renewal fee of $65.

RNs and LPNs must complete at least 24 contact hours of continuing education (CE) to renew an Ohio nursing license. If you have been licensed by endorsement for a year or less prior to your first Ohio license renewal, the CE requirement drops to at least 12 contact hours, instead of 24.
